The Next Generation Naturalist’s Yearbook Part 1
Yearbook created by Maggie Jones with contributions from Isaac Nelson, Shekinah Jimenez, Amber Fill, Victoria Decaire, and Jesse Ritcey.
A note from Jesse Ritcey: After three years KNC’s ‘Next Generation Naturalists’ program has concluded. To refresh everyone’s memory, Next Gen (as the project is known), is a youth environmental leadership program I started in 2019 after successfully applying for a $227,500 grant from The Lawson Foundation. The Lawson Foundation describes themselves as a “Canadian family foundation that invests in and engages with ideas, people and organizations that contribute to the healthy development of children and youth.” They supported 10 diverse projects across Canada, including ours, which focused on cultivating a new generation of naturalists. In the first year we recruited 35 youth, about half from high school and half from TRU. Due to folks moving away or different tolerance levels for risk, our group saw a lot of attrition, down to about 15 members. However, that opened an opportunity to work with participants more individually and to direct greater resources to everyone. We continue to be impressed by the positive impact group members are creating through representing the club at conferences, engaging in government planning processes, attending demonstrations and rallies, doing environmental work for their careers, or inspiring change with their writing and art. Many remain directly involved with the work of the Kamloops Naturalist Club or in touch with other group members through our project Facebook page.
